A Complete Guide to the NHS App for Managing Your Prescriptions

Person using the NHS App on their smartphone

If you haven't yet downloaded the NHS App, here's a complete guide to managing your prescriptions digitally — and much more besides. For Wakefield residents taking regular medication, the app can save hours of phone calls to the GP surgery, reduce trips into town, and give you direct control over when and where your prescriptions are sent. We'll walk you through setup, ordering, and the features that make it genuinely useful.

What the NHS App Can Do

The NHS App is a free smartphone application (iPhone and Android) that puts several NHS services in your pocket. The main features are:

  • Ordering repeat prescriptions — request medication without phoning the surgery
  • Viewing your medical record — see your current medications, allergies, test results, and diagnoses
  • Managing your nominated pharmacy — set or change where your prescriptions go
  • Checking your vaccination history — useful if you're booking travel jabs or need a record for work
  • Booking and managing GP appointments
  • Accessing NHS 111 online

You can also use the same features through the NHS website on a computer if you prefer.

How to Set Up Your Account

Getting started is straightforward and takes about 10 minutes:

  1. Download the app from the App Store or Google Play Store.
  2. Create an account using your email address and set a password.
  3. Verify your identity — this is the crucial step. You'll be asked to confirm who you are using photo ID or by answering security questions linked to your NHS record. The NHS takes this seriously because it's protecting access to your medical information.
  4. Connect to your GP surgery — most GP practices in Wakefield are linked to the NHS App, so your records should appear automatically once identity verification is complete.

If you get stuck on identity verification, your GP surgery can walk you through it — it's a common step and they're used to helping patients.

Ordering Repeat Prescriptions

This is the feature that saves the most time. Here's how it works:

  1. Open the app and tap Prescriptions.
  2. You'll see a list of your available repeat medications — these are prescriptions your GP has already approved for repeat ordering.
  3. Select the items you need (you don't have to order all of them every time).
  4. Choose your nominated pharmacy (or nominate Kingfisher Pharmacy if you haven't already).
  5. Submit your request.

Your GP surgery will review the request and send it electronically to your pharmacy via the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS). EPS covers about 99% of GP surgeries in England, so it's highly likely your practice is using it. At Kingfisher Pharmacy, electronic prescriptions typically arrive within 2–4 hours of being issued by the surgery.

Important things to remember:

  • Order in advance. Allow a few working days for your GP to process the request and for the pharmacy to prepare your medication. Don't wait until you've run out.
  • Not all medications can be ordered this way. Some — particularly controlled drugs or medications that need regular review — must be requested directly from your GP surgery. If an item isn't in your repeat list, that's why.
  • Check your nominated pharmacy is correct. Make sure Kingfisher Pharmacy (or your preferred pharmacy) is set as your nominated pharmacy in the app. If you need help changing it, we can help in-store or you can do it through the app's account settings.

Viewing Your Medical Record & Vaccination History

The NHS App lets you access read-only sections of your GP medical record:

  • Current and past medications
  • Allergies and adverse reactions
  • Test results (blood work, blood pressure, etc.)
  • Vaccination history (flu, COVID-19, childhood immunisations)
  • Conditions and diagnoses

This is particularly handy when visiting a pharmacy, starting treatment with a new doctor, or planning a trip where you need vaccination records. You can also screenshot or download your vaccination record — useful if you need proof for travel.

Managing Your Nominated Pharmacy

Your nominated pharmacy is where all your NHS prescriptions go by default. Changing it through the app is instant:

  1. Go to Account or Profile settings in the app.
  2. Find Nominated pharmacy.
  3. Search for Kingfisher Pharmacy (192 Kirkgate, Wakefield).
  4. Select and confirm.

The change takes effect immediately. If you have any trouble, pop in and we can help — or call us on 01924 291898.

Security & Your Data

The NHS App uses NHS login, which requires identity verification before you can access anything. Your data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Only you can log in and see your information.

If you lose your phone, you can:

  • Log out of all devices through the NHS website.
  • Change your NHS login password.
  • You won't lose access to your prescriptions or records — they stay with your GP and pharmacy.

The app meets the same data security standards as other NHS digital services. Read more about NHS App security on NHS.uk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the app to order prescriptions for someone else?

The app is tied to your NHS login, so you can only access your own medical record and order your own prescriptions. If you manage prescriptions for a family member — an elderly parent, for example — they can create their own NHS account and app, or you can order on their behalf if they've given you power of attorney. Proxy access is expanding but isn't yet available everywhere. Speak to your GP surgery about the best way to manage this.

What if my GP surgery isn't connected to the NHS App?

Most surgeries in Wakefield are connected. If yours isn't, you can check directly with the practice, or call your pharmacy and ask how they receive prescriptions. You can always order by phone or in person as a backup.

Can I use the app to order prescriptions without setting up a nominated pharmacy?

You'll need to select a pharmacy when you place the order, but it doesn't have to be your "nominated" one — you can pick any pharmacy in the country. However, setting Kingfisher Pharmacy as your nominated pharmacy means prescriptions go to us by default, which saves a step.

Do I still need to visit the pharmacy after ordering through the app?

Yes — the app orders your prescriptions, but you (or someone on your behalf) still need to collect them. That said, we offer free local delivery within Wakefield for those who need it, so you don't have to come into the shop if that's difficult. Call us to arrange delivery.

What happens if I need a medicine that isn't on my repeat list?

If it's a new medication your GP prescribed, you'll need to ask your GP surgery to send that prescription to your pharmacy directly (either via EPS or on paper). Once it's been reviewed a few times, your GP may add it to your repeat list so you can order it through the app going forward.

Is it safe to store my vaccination record on my phone?

Yes, it's secure and it's the most convenient way to carry it. But it's also wise to take a screenshot or download a PDF copy as backup — just in case you lose access to the app or phone.

What if I get an error message saying my pharmacy isn't found?

Try searching for "Kingfisher" or just "Wakefield." If we still don't appear, give us a call on 01924 291898 and we can troubleshoot — sometimes there's a delay in the NHS App registering a new pharmacy, though we've been in the system for years.

Can I set reminders to order my repeat prescriptions?

The NHS App doesn't have a built-in reminder feature, but you can set a calendar alert on your phone. Many patients set a monthly or quarterly reminder based on how often they order.

The NHS App genuinely does make managing regular prescriptions easier — no more waiting on hold to the surgery, no more worrying you've missed your refill. It takes about 10 minutes to set up properly, and then it becomes part of your routine.

If you have any questions about the app, nominating Kingfisher Pharmacy, or how your prescriptions work, come in and speak to our team. We're on Kirkgate in Wakefield city centre, and we're always happy to help you get the most out of your NHS services.
